He was a singer-songwriter and composer born David Allen Loggins in Mountain City, Tennessee who started out his career as an insurance salesman and draftsman before concentrating full-time on a profession in the music business.
In 1970 he moved to Nashville and he toured England with The Everly Brothers shortly after. His first songwriting success came in 1971 after Three Dog Night took his “Pieces of April” into the Top 10 and in 1974 he had his own hit with his song “Please Come to Boston”.
He reached the No. 1 spot on the country chart when he duetted with Anne Murray on the CMA Award winning “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do” in 1984 and Kenny Rogers also took his “Morning Desire” to No. 1.
Many other artists recorded his songs and these include Alabama, Crystal Gayle, Wynonna Judd, Toby Keith, Reba McEntire, Juice Newton, Restless Heart and Don Williams and on the television he is recognised for “Augusta” which is used as the theme tune for The Masters Golf Tournament.
Busy in the recording studio as a solo performer or as a backing singer for other artists he appeared on his own Apprentice, Please Come to Boston, Personal Belongings, Country Suite, Good Side of Tomorrow and One Way Ticket to Paradise as well as Somewhere Over China and Volcano by Jimmy Buffett, Buzz by Buzz Cason, Storm in the Heartland by Billy Ray Cyrus, Sweet Sixteen by Reba McEntire, Now & Forever by Anne Murray, Stones by Dan Seals, Greatest Country Hits by Don Williams and many more.
In recognition of his contribution to music he received 25 ASCAP Awards, 4 Grammy Awards, a CMA Awards, was named “Country Songwriter of the Year” by ASCAP in 1987 and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1995.
Singing and songwriting is very much in the family as his son, Quinn, has followed in his footsteps and his cousin is the successful singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins.
He died in July 2024 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was 76 years old.
