Jones, Christian

Bass trombonist who started playing at ten years of age and attended the Royal Academy of Music and Staffordshire Performing Arts and studied under the watchful eye of Robert Hughes.

In 2001, he joined the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.  Upon graduation from the RAM in 2002, he relocated to London and joined the Philharmonia.

Other groups with whom he has worked include the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Britten Sinfonia, the European Union Youth Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the London Sinfonietta, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Midland Youth Orchestra, the National Youth Brass Band of Wales, Opera North, and the University of York Symphony Orchestra.

On 6th April 2004, the trombonists of the Philharmonia offered up an album concert at Royal Festival Hall as part of International Trombone Week.  The album they performed was The London Trombone Sound, which features everything from “Ave Maria” to the theme from The Pink Panther.

Soloists of the Philharmonia interpreted Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf on 30th March 2006.  The concert included an introductory act written by Lori Spee and Erik Van der Wurff.

On 21st July 2006, Christian again participated in the International Trombone Festival, this time held in Birmingham, England.  Here he shared the stage with pianist Alison Procter and tenor trombonist Katy Pryce, under the baton of Adrian Boult.

Christian delivered the world premiere performance and recording of the bass trombone concerto of Gareth Wood in 2008.  The premiere featured Nigel Boddice conducting the National Youth Brass Band of Wales and appears on the 2009 album, Vienna Nights.

On 19th April 2011, the Philharmonia appeared at Royal Festival Hall with Lorin Maazelconducting “Symphony No. 6” by Gustav Mahler.

The Philharmonia Brass performed at the Worcester Three Choirs Festival in August 2011.

In the field of music education, Christian has taught at the English Brass Academy, the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College, the Royal Welsh College, and Trinity Colleges of Music.
