Wright, Benjamin

Trumpeter from Evansville, Indiana, who started out on violin at three years of age and gravitated to his instrument of choice at ten. He attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Interlochen Arts Academy, and the Tanglewood Music Institute. His teachers included Chris Gekker, Charlie Geyer, Mark Gould, and Michael Sachs.

In 2002, he became a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Other groups with whom he has worked include the Bar Harbor Brass, the BSO Brass Quintet, the Chicago Symphony, the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra.

At Tanglewood, he was in the orchestra pit for a golden anniversary mounting of the opera Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten.

In May and June 2006, he did a guest stint with the San Francisco Symphony when they performed Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Symphony No. 98”, Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 8”, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Concerto for Two Pianos”, Francis Poulenc’s “Concerto for Two Pianos”, and Maurice Ravel’s “La Valse”.

He helped turn the BSO Brass Quintet into a sextet on 25^th July 2011, playing cornet in a performance of “Trompeten-sextett in E flat, Op. 30” by Oskar Bohme. In April 2012, he reunited with the brass quintet in a pair of recitals at Northeastern University and Tuckerman Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts.

In the field of music education, he has taught at Boston Conservatory, the Longy School of Music, the National Orchestral Institute, the New England Conservatory of Music, and the Tanglewood Music Institute. He has given master classes at the Interlochen Center of the Arts, the Manhattan School of Music and Saint Mary’s College, and participated in the International Trumpet Guild Conference and New York Brass Conference as a clinician and guest artist.
