This orchestra was founded in Bratislava as the first one to meet the needs of Slovakian broadcasting in 1929. It was a relatively small group at first but after Alexander Moyzeshad become Musical Director it had gained in size from 1942.
They began to give concerts that were broadcast by Slovak Radio as live transmissions. His successors carried on the work of bringing Slovakian music to the fore as well as giving performances of well known works and they became established in the international forum.
They have had successful concert tours throughout the world and have made many recordings although their own concert hall in the Slovak Radio building is relatively small and only houses 530 people in the audience.
